Switch 2 specs accommodate more modern ports but also benefit fans of classic games. On the other hand, the handheld's GameCube emulator isn't as smooth as some players had hoped. Many games exhibit issues that aren't as common with the Dolphin emulator.

Nintendo is aware of the popularity of its past consoles among retro gamers. To entice buyers to upgrade to the Switch 2, it introduced GameCube games to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers. However, some fans are finding the emulator used on the new handheld disappointing. Complaints include input delays and overly sensitive controls, which can affect titles like F-Zero GX.

Gamers had hopes that the improved Switch 2 specs would enhance its GameCube emulator. Still, many players now remember their less-than-positive N64 experiences on the original console. In addition to control issues, gamers often encountered graphical bugs and poor performance. Some of these problems have returned when the Switch 2 runs GameCube games, including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Soulcalibur 2.

Less-than-precise inputs in racing games can be frustrating. Likewise, combat in other titles is difficult, as players find it challenging to defend against attacks before they land. The fact that the handheld streams emulated games instead of booting local ROMs also adds latency. Ideally, the Switch 2 would natively play classic titles rather than rely on emulation. Unfortunately, it would take a Herculean effort from Nintendo to remaster or remake every game.

Many gamers consider the Dolphin emulator the best way to relive the GameCube era. The developers have strived to make the experience as seamless as possible on multiple platforms. Users have far more ways to tweak graphics and controls than is possible on the Switch 2. With Dolphin setting the standard for a GameCube emulator, fans believe Nintendo can optimize gameplay.

Despite some negativity, most Switch 2 gamers appreciate the expanded GameCube library. The new Switch 2 GameCube controller may not improve responsiveness. Even so, it can make retro gaming more comfortable and authentic.
