Retroid has finally revealed the meaning behind the various cryptic messages it has been posting on X this week. From two-headed snakes to vague Bill & Ted references, it seemed that the company had a dual-screen device of some sort up its sleeve. While Retroid has now confirmed what it had up its sleeve, it may not be the device that people had in mind.
In fact, Retroid has not been building up to a new device at all. Instead, it has been working on an accessory that brings a secondary display to the Pocket Mini, Pocket 5 and Pocket 4 Pro (curr. $174 on Amazon). For the time being, Retroid has not revealed any technical specifications about the so-called 'Retroid Dual Screen Add-On'.
With that being said, it looks like Retroid has borrowed the 5.5-inch display from the Pocket 5. To that end, the company has confirmed that the add-on uses an OLED panel, which outputs at 1080p and 60 Hz on the Pocket 5. Meanwhile, the accessory's design suggests that it outputs to one of those handhelds via DisplayPort Alt Mode using their USB Type-C ports.
Thus, the add-on will eat into the battery life of any handheld to which it is connected. Retroid has not outlined the power consumption yet, though. Nonetheless, the Dual Screen Add-On will support pass-through charging and has an adjustable clamp. Please note that the accessory does not include the grip that Retroid has included in its early promotional material. Currently, Retroid anticipates revealing more details next week and is said to have already determined pricing.
