Gamers struggling to find a physical copy of Chibi-Robo! recently received welcome news. With a limited print run, the 2005 GameCube platformer proved charming enough to fascinate collectors. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers will soon be able to access the title on the streaming service. It may defy conventional wisdom, but the first-party Nintendo game is actually selling for more now.
TheGamer researched closing prices for many classic Nintendo games now available in digital form. While it’s too early to draw conclusions for Chibi-Robo!, other Nintendo Switch Online additions have jumped in value. Nintendo 64 favorites have benefited most from the increase in exposure. Games like Shadow Man, Banjo-Tooie, and Iggy's Reckin' Balls are all selling for 20-30% more on eBay than before they arrived on Nintendo’s service.
On the GameCube, Soul Calibur II is realizing 73% higher auction prices. The Game Boy Advance largely defies these trends, with F-Zero: GP Legend serving as a rare example of a game that has increased in value. Still, the vast majority of streaming Nintendo Classics are now considered even more desirable by retro gamers.
How Nintendo fans are resisting digital gaming
Most original cartridges and cases don’t cross the $200 threshold like some Chibi-Robo! sales. Nevertheless, despite the convenience of digital gaming, Nintendo fans still covet physical releases. Modern Nintendo consumers have also lobbied against Game-Key Cards, unwilling to accept industry trends. Reintroducing fans to emulated versions of classic titles only boosts the demand for tangible media.
Even the price of more recent first-party Nintendo games remains stubbornly high. With an unwavering appetite, buyers purchase Switch and Switch 2 games at full price. Years ago, game collectors recognized the profit potential and are now cashing in on their investments.
Of course, collectors often don’t risk damaging the cartridges from past console eras. After sending games to graders or displaying them on shelves, they can safely revisit them on Nintendo Switch Online.
