Not surprisingly, the recent PS5 price increase announcement annoyed many gamers. To address those concerns, Sony has launched the Upgrader Program for new console purchases. Discovered by PlayStation Lifestyle, select U.S. customers are receiving $100 PS Store credits.
The site was sent confirmation from multiple buyers. There are also details on the PlayStation website, suggesting that the offer may become widespread. Gamers with PSN accounts who upgrade from a PS4 to a PS5, from a PS5 to a PS5 Pro, or even swap a launch PS5 for a PS5 Slim may see an email invitation.
Other stipulations include a one PlayStation Store credit per account limit. Also, purchases of PS5 consoles before August 26th should qualify before the Upgrader Program ends on September 20th.
On August 20th, Sony revealed that due to difficult economic conditions, buyers would face a $50 PS5 price increase. That brought the PS5 digital to $499, the PS5 with disc drive to $549.99, and the PS5 Pro to a lofty $749.99. Immediately, U.S customers complained about the historically unusual price hike on older systems. Still, with Xbox consoles also now demanding a higher price, there are few alternatives.
Not only gamers are worried about the PS5 price
Even some publishers have voiced complaints about the expense of PlayStation machines. Capcom blamed the slow sales of Monster Hunter Wilds partly on the higher prices. Japanese PS5 consoles already rose in price in 2024, while gamers in the EU, Australia, and New Zealand are also paying more.
The $100 PlayStation Store credit should entice new console owners to purchase AAA PS5 games. Even so, the question is what, if anything, Sony will do after the promotion ends later in September.
