Limited PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition suffers from inflated scalper prices
The pre-sale of the PlayStation 5 Pro and the strictly limited 30th Anniversary Edition, which started at 10 a.m. on September 26, 2024, is likely to have been largely frustrating for fans. Buyers flocked to Sony's PlayStation Direct website to get their hands on one of the first consoles. However, the rush quickly led to overloaded servers and long queues. After a short time, both the PS5 Pro and the anniversary collection were sold out.
While many real fans were left empty-handed, some scalpers were able to get a hold of the limited anniversary version of the PS5 Pro. These are people who want to take advantage of the artificial shortage to make a quick profit. Scalpers seem to be hoping for high four-digit profits from the 30th Anniversary Edition. The anniversary bundle, which was sold by Sony for $999, was already being offered on eBay for absurdly high prices of $35,000. At the time of research, the price on eBay was around $3,000, though some listings were as high as $5,000.
The standard version of the PS5 Pro is also being scalped, although the price difference from the original sale price of $699 remains in the triple-digit range. At the time of the research, the console was listed on eBay for around $1,000.
Release of the PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition with a retro look is still pending
For those who wanted to get their hands on a 30th Anniversary Edition, there is still hope: The pre-sale of the PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition in the anniversary look starts on October 10. Fans will now have another opportunity to secure a PS5 in the gray retro design without having to pay the scalpers' exorbitant prices.
