Sony PS5 Pro needs new Faceplates due to arbitrary design decisions — Dbrand has thoughts

Despite having identical dimensions to the PS5 Slim's side covers, the PS5 Pro forces gamers to buy faceplates specifically designed for the new console. Sony has confirmed that its old Console Covers are not compatible, indicating that it will launch a version specifically designed for PS5 Pro customisation. Dbrand, infamous for its third-party tech customisation accessories, says exactly what everyone is thinking.

Sony's already-sordid PS5 customisation history looks like it's getting even more divisive with the recent launch of the PS5 Pro. First, Sony threatened Dbrand with legal action over its Darkplates, which presented an alternative to Sony's upcoming first-party customisations. Now, however, even Sony's proprietary Console Covers will need an update to fit on the shiny PlayStation 5 Pro — meaning PS5 Slim owners will have to shell out even more money if they also want to customise their PS5 Pros.

According to a redditor on r/PlayStation, who managed to get his hands on both a PS5 Pro and a set of Sony's Console Covers for the PS5 Slim, the PS5 Pro is incompatible with the old Console Covers, and, by extension, likely Dbrand's Darkplates 2.0, as well. Adding insult to injury, the incompatibility appears to be an arbitrary, or intentional, design decision — the plates are dimensionally identical, but the clips are in slightly different location on the PS5 Pro, meaning the PS5 Slim's plates will not lock into position.

For reference, Sony's in-house PS5 Slim Console Covers come in at a fairly premium price of $59.99, even exceeding the price of some games. Dbrand's solution costs just $0.05 less, at $59.95.

Of course, ever ready to relish in online drama, Dbrand issued a response on X, simply posting a GTA San Andreas meme in a repost. It's likely that Dbrand was already aware of the incompatibility, but it will be interesting to see if the company is able to somehow circumvent Sony's peculiar design decision with a Darkplate implementation that works on both the PS5 Slim and Pro.

Check out the heavily discounted Lenovo Legion Go ($499.99 via Lenovo US or Amazon) if you want a customisable gaming console that runs Windows.
