Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds free open beta may have been a genius marketing ploy disguised as a development exercise. Despite the franchise's somewhat niche history, Wilds has attracted over 450,000 players on Steam in the first two hours after going live.

When Capcom announced the Monster Hunter Wilds free open beta test, it was clear from the hype that it was going to be a popular event in the gaming landscape, but by all accounts, it seems to have exceeded the expectations set by its forbears.

According to SteamDB, which tracks and charts the number of players currently playing a game, Monster Hunter Wilds managed to rack up as many as 463,798 concurrent players on Steam. This puts Monster Hunter Wilds ahead of Monster Hunter World by more than 100,000 players. It also managed to outpace the more recent Monster Hunter Rise, raking in more than twice as many players on Steam.

Much of the hype is, without a doubt, partially because of the hype around a free demo for the AAA ARPG, but it's also testament to the continued popularity of Monster Hunter. While Capcom pitched the Monster Hunter Wilds open beta as a server load and game stability test, it also openly admits that it's a prime opportunity to introduce new players to the Monster Hunter franchise.
