Those looking to buy a PlayStation 5 in India may have to pay more in the coming weeks. This represents a second price hike for the console since it launched in 2021. Industry analyst Rishi Alwani had heard from sources that Sony plans to increase the cost of the base PS5 to ₹58,990 ($689). Similarly, the PS5 Digital Edition could soon cost ₹49,990 ($584).
That represents a ₹4,000 ($47) price hike for the PS5 and ₹5,000 for the Digital Edition. Overall, the former will now be ₹9,000 ($105) pricier than its launch price of ₹49,990 ($584). The disc-less version, initially unveiled at ₹39,990 ($467) is dearer by a whopping ₹10,000 ($116). This comes after Sony's recent decision to hike PlayStation 5 prices globally. The abrupt price hike, combined with no signs of a PS5 Pro launch, will undoubtedly cause some friction in the price-sensitive market.
Unfortunately, this is the only current-gen console one can reliably buy in India. The Xbox Series X is difficult to find, and it recently unveiled digital-only edition and 2 TB variant haven't even launched in India. That effectively leaves gamers with the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and a Nintendo Switch 2 that costs as much as a PS5.
