With millions of gamers now owning a PS5, Sony is preparing more and more for the continuity of these products. In just a few months, this game console will celebrate its fifth anniversary. And while each model lasts an average of seven to eight years, the future of PlayStation raises a number of questions. But recently, the Japanese firm spoke out about the PS6 and made a revelation that should interest many gamers.
Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino revealed some information about the future of PlayStation at a business meeting last week. And he particularly emphasized cloud gaming.
Indeed, this feature is fast becoming a key element in the video game sector, which leads us to wonder about its possible pre-eminence on the PS6. However, according to Hideaki Nishino, the situation could change: "Cloud streaming is progressing well from a technical standpoint, as we have demonstrated with [our] offerings, but end-to-end network stability is not in our control. And the higher cost per playtime compared to the traditional console model remains a challenge".
He also points out that most PS5 and PS5 Pro players prefer to play locally: "Cloud gaming is increasingly providing an additional option for players to access content, but our belief is that the majority of players continue to want to experience gaming through local execution without dependency on network conditions. And PS5 and PS5 Pro have validated this thesis, I believe".
As a result, he is thinking of a new, more efficient way for gamers to make use of the services and content offered by Sony, while remaining evasive about the very future of this new console : "While we cannot share further details at this stage, the future of the platform is top of mind. We are committed to exploring a new and enhanced way for players to engage with our content and services". So, while cloud gaming may not be a priority, new opportunities may be opening up.
