Sony is working on a PlayStation handheld that is said to feature AI upscaling, 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and have 16 MB of MALL cache. It is unclear when the handheld will be launched as some rumors point to a 2028 release while others hint at a 2027 date.

Both Xbox and PlayStation have been rumored to be working on a handheld and while Xbox has made its attempt official, the PlayStation handheld is still a mystery. There have been quite a few leaks and rumors hinting at some of the capabilities, and now more information has surfaced from the same source. The leaker states that the PlayStation handheld will come with 16 GB RAM, AI upscaling, and more memory cache than the PS5.

According to KeplerL2 on the NeoGAF forum, the PlayStation handheld will be using 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM since LPDDR6 is still years away. It will have a third of the PS5’s memory bandwidth but will feature more cache and improved memory compression. The handheld is said to come with 4MB of L2 cache and 16 MB of MALL cache, the latter of which is missing from both the PS5 and the PS5 Pro. This is meant to offset the lower bandwidth of the handheld.

The leaker also adds that the PlayStation handheld will be the only AMD-powered handheld with AI upscaling, at least for the near future. This should allow the device to deliver on its previous claims of being able to run PS5 games natively, albeit at lower resolution and visual fidelity.

In May, rumors surrounding the PlayStation handheld claimed it will be powered by a 2 nm chip from Samsung. It was stated that the handheld is called 'Jupiter' internally and that it won't enter mass production until 2028. This timeline doesn’t seem to align with other leaks or with Sony’s seven-year console cycle, which suggests a PS6 launch in 2027. And, the handheld is said to arrive with the PS6.

On the other hand, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X have been unveiled as the handheld Xbox consoles that will be powered by the AMD Ryzen Z2A and the Ryzen Z2 AI Extreme respectively. The handhelds will launch end of this year.
