Assuming Sony and Microsoft continue with a 7-year console cycle that the companies have adopted for the past two generations, the PS5 and the Xbox Series consoles are in the latter half of their lifecycle. As such, reports have been circulating online that we will see the next-gen Xbox and the PS6 sometime in 2027.
When the consoles do launch, both the next-gen Xbox and the PlayStation 6 will run on AMD silicon. Microsoft recently confirmed that the company is working on the next-gen Xbox with AMD, while several leaks have suggested that the PS6 will utilize an AMD SoC with a UDNA-based iGPU.
RDNA 5 or UDNA is reportedly AMD’s next-gen GPU architecture, bringing significant improvements over the RDNA 4 architecture currently used in the RX 9000 GPUs. Noted leaker KeplerL2 has confirmed on the NeoGAF forums that both the PS6 and the next-gen Xbox are “using the same GPU architecture”.
KeplerL2 hasn’t shared anything about the CPU or other specs of the consoles. Where the next-gen Xbox and PS6 might feature the same GPU architecture, the consoles can differ in their final configurations. So, the next-gen Xbox and the PS6 could have different CPUs, Compute Units, and more.
When it comes to performance, KeplerL2 suggests that the UDNA architecture might be 20% faster per Compute Unit than RDNA 4 and bring “around 2x” better RT/AI performance. RDNA 4 already brings a big RT improvement over the RDNA 3 architecture of the Xbox Series and the base PS5. Assuming a 2x RT gain for UDNA, the next-gen consoles will be RT beasts.
Moreover, since AMD has now almost caught up to Nvidia in image upscaling, games running on the upcoming Xbox and PS6 consoles should also both look and play great.
Next-gen Xbox and PS6 specs
Aside from the rumblings around the UDNA architecture, we don’t know much about the hardware of the next-gen consoles. However, we can expect both the next-gen Xbox and PS6 to bring more RAM, a much faster CPU based on the Zen 5 or Zen 6 CPU architecture, and possibly even PCIe Gen 5 storage.
Additionally, it won’t be surprising if both Sony and Microsoft decide against physical disk drives. Sony and Microsoft have been moving away from offering disk drives, as most people already download most of their games digitally. So, the next-gen PS6 and Xbox consoles could be all-digital.
Finally, Microsoft has basically confirmed that there will be multiple next-gen Xbox consoles. So, there likely will be different AMD SoCs that these consoles rely on, just like the Xbox Series S and X.
Needless to say, the information provided by KepkerL2 and our speculations should all be taken with caution. We don’t know what form the next Xbox and PS6 will take until we see some official details.
