For quite some time, the rumor mill has been churning information about the next gen consoles and their APUs. It is expected that both Sony and Microsoft will have multiple devices as part of the next generation, with Sony working on a true handheld device to accompany the PS6. Now, a prolific leaker has allegedly confirmed the codenames for the APUs that will be powering these consoles.
The information comes from Moore’s Law is Dead (MLID) who shared an update on a recent video of his where he talks about specs for AMDs RDNA 5 platform. In the video, the leaker mentioned ‘Magnus’ as the codename for the APU powering the next Xbox but there were a few names popping up for the PS6 and PS handheld APUs. MLID has seemingly got confirmation now, and Magnus is in fact the codename for the next gen Xbox APU while the PS6’s APU is codenamed ‘Orion’ and the PS handheld’s APU is codenamed ‘Canis.’
The leaker claimed that this is accurate information and also apologized for all the corrections made in the recent past.
It is too soon to draw conclusions about the performance gains for these next gen consoles and APUs but the leaker believes that the 68 RDNA 5 CUs in Magnus could be twice as fast as the 60 CU APU inside the PS5 Pro. That is, if the iGPU is clocked high. If not, then Magnus might only bring a 40-50% raster performance increase over the PS5 Pro. It is also believed that Microsoft is planning multiple Xbox devices and one of those could become the first console to cost over $1,000.
Following the console life cycle, the next generation Xbox and PlayStation should arrive in 2027 but there are also rumors floating around about a 2026 launch for the next Xbox. Of course, Microsoft and Sony have not shared any information on the release timelines for their next console.
