The Sony PlayStation 6 handheld console, which is expected to launch alongside the regular PlayStation 6, is reportedly a pretty capable machine with Zen 6c CPU cores and an RDNA 5 iGPU. Moore's Law Is Dead has now leaked a plethora of details regarding the upcoming handheld.

For more than a decade, it seemed that Sony had given up on portable PlayStation consoles after the PS Vita failed to gain traction. On a pure hardware level, the PS Vita was an incredible successor to the PSP. However, the PS Vita was expensive to own and play games on, and Sony didn’t really release many blockbusters for the console. The PS6 handheld is apparently going to fix a lot of the PS Vita’s missteps.

Moore’s Law Is Dead has now revealed a ton of PS6 handheld information, including specs and performance of the “Canis” AMD APU that is said to power the PS6 portable console.

PS6 handheld console specs and performance

According to MLID, the PS6 handheld console is powered by the “Canis” APU featuring four Zen 6c CPU cores, an RDNA 5 iGPU with 12-20 RDNA 5 Compute Units and 1.6-2 GHz boost clocks, and a 128-bit wide memory bus. The memory inside the system is said to be of LPDDRX-7500+ type.

Based on 3 nm like the PS6 console’s “Orion” and the next-gen Xbox’s “Magnus” AMD APU, the Canis APU inside the PS6 handheld reportedly reaches around half the rasterization performance of the base PlayStation 5 (Available on Amazon). However, the PS6 portable’s ray tracing performance should be much higher than the PS5's.

In essence, the PS6 handheld console should, according to MLID, outperform the ROG Xbox Ally X. This is pretty awesome news if true, especially considering that the PS6 portable allegedly enjoys full PS5 and PS4 backwards compatibility. So, the PS6 handheld should be powerful enough to run all PS4 games at 60 FPS without any issues.

Finally, MLID also confirms that the PS6 portable console will have:

  •  A microSD port
  • An M.2 slot for storage expansion
  • Haptic feedback
  • Dual mics
  • A touchscreen

More importantly, the PS6 portable will seemingly be able to output video through its Type-C port. So, you can just use the console as your only gaming platform by connecting it to a TV or a monitor and a controller.

PS6 handheld release date

MLID claims that the PS6 portable console will likely land sometime in Fall 2027 or early 2028, as mass production of the console is set to begin in mid-2027. This is the same timeline that MLID also shared for the regular PS6 console.

As with MLID’s PS6 console leak, the information presented here has allegedly been taken from an AMD presentation to Sony from 2023. So, it is quite likely that some of it is already outdated.
