Sony had its Q2 earnings call today, November 11, where it shared an update on its businesses. While talking about the gaming segment, specifically hardware, one of the executives spoke about the PS5 and its continued support, for many years to come. That’s great news for those who just bought a PS5 ($499 on Amazon) or were planning to do so in the near future.
During the Q and A round of the call, when asked about the future strategy for the PS5, Sony Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Lin Tao spoke about how there are still a large number of users on the PS4, even though that console was launched over a decade ago. Because of this, Sony believes that the PS5 is only in the middle of its journey. The full quote is as follows:
Our view is that compared to conventional console life cycles, looking at the PS4 life cycle, it seems to be getting longer and longer. Especially the PS4 which was launched in 2013 and it’s been over a decade since then, but there are many active users enjoying the console. So, from that perspective, we believe that the PS5 is only in the middle of the journey and we are really planning to expand it even further.
This essentially means that support and development for the PS5 will continue for years to come, even after the PS6 launches in 2027 or 2028. It is unlikely that Sony is hinting at a delayed launch for the PS6 as the PS4 is still supported, though now with developers starting to step away from the console, alongside the PS5. By the time the PS6 releases, there will be even more users on the PS5 so it makes sense to continue development for that large user base, both from Sony and the game developer’s perspective.
