Developer questions if PS6 specs will convince PS5 owners to upgrade on release date

While rumors point to a 2027 or 2028 PS6 release date, critics wonder how many gamers will upgrade. On a recent Moore’s Law Is Dead podcast, Alderon Games founder Matthew Cassells shared his thoughts on the console. He believes that improvements to ray tracing alone won’t entice all buyers.
Cassells and his studio are currently developing the dinosaur-themed MMO Path of Titans. On the podcast spotted by Wccftech, he notes how the PS4 still maintains a large user base. As of 2025, as many as 40% of PlayStation ecosystem supporters relied on the previous-gen console. Yet, these gamers may be more likely to purchase a new system than PS5 owners.
Some loyalists haven’t seen enough reason to make the generational leap. Until recently, many popular third-party projects accommodated the PS4. Still, these gamers will soon have little option but to consider a newer console. On the other hand, PS5 fans can expect years more of titles with acceptable performance.
Is Ray Tracing a system seller?
Sony’s next gaming machine is expected to bring 6-12x the ray tracing performance as the PS5. As seen in newer games like Resident Evil Requiem, the technology already makes lighting effects look more convincing. Even so, it may not be a selling point for most buyers on the PS6 release date. As the Alderon Games founder says, “Are you really going to upgrade for a ray tracing improvement?”
With a variation of RDNA 5, PS6 specs should also introduce even more efficient upscaling. That could result in smoother 4K/120 fps visuals and even a legitimate 8K option. Regardless, players will need an attractive launch lineup that goes beyond a tech showcase. Another concern is the PS6 price, which the storage and memory shortage threatens to inflate.
During the discussion, Moore’s Law Is Dead proposed prioritizing the rumored PS6 handheld. A way to natively play PS5 games on the go with minimal compromises could intrigue skeptics. Sony would need to achieve a reasonable price point in the $399 range. It may then be easier to encourage early adopters than with a more expensive, modestly upgraded console.
