Detailed specs of the Sony PlayStation 6 have leaked online courtesy of Moore's Law Is Dead. This latest PS6 specs leak reveals everything from the configuration of the CPU, GPU, and memory to the expected performance upgrade. The Sony PS6 reportedly enjoys a giant performance gain over the PS5.

The Sony PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox are expected to spearhead the next generation of home gaming consoles. Both consoles are reportedly armed with advanced AMD APUs with Zen 6 CPU cores and RDNA 5 GPU cores. For the PS6, this APU is allegedly the AMD Orion, a package comprising Zen 6 + Zen 6c CPU cores and an RDNA 5 iGPU.

Moore’s Law Is Dead has now revealed almost everything there is to know about the internal hardware and performance of the Sony PlayStation 6. The leaker has also outed the expected PS6 release date.

Sony PS6 specs

Per MLID, the Sony PS6 will be powered by the AMD Orion APU. The APU is reportedly around a 280 mm2 monolithic die fabbed on the TSMC 3 nm node. On the CPU side, the PS6 Orion APU features 7-8 x Zen 6c cores and 2 x Zen 6 LP cores. While the former will be used for games, MLID claims that the presence of the two Zen 6 LP cores is to take care of the background OS processes, saving 20% CPU performance for the games.

The GPU side of the puzzle is reportedly handled by a 50-52 CU RDNA 5 iGPU, clocked at around 2.6 to 3 GHz, and utilizing 10 MB of L2 cache. This configuration seemingly grants the PS6 34 to 40 TFLOPs of raw GPU performance. By contrast, the Sony PlayStation 5 offers around 10.28 TFLOPs of GPU compute, while the Xbox Series X is more powerful at 12 TFLOPS (Buy the console on Amazon).

MLID reports that, with up to 40 TFLOPs of compute, the PS6 will end up around 2.5x to 3x faster than the PS5 in pure Rasterization, and a much faster 6x to 12x in Ray tracing workloads. With FSR4 in tow, the leaker alleges an overall performance improvement of around 4x to 8x for the PS6 vs the PS5 (Available on Amazon).

However, the leaker expects the Xbox Magnus to still be 25% faster than the Sony PS6. There have been many reports that the next Xbox home console will be, more or less, a desktop PC in everything but the name. It is expected to run a customized build of Windows and allow access to multiple storefronts like Steam and Epic. But it could be much more expensive than the current generation of gaming consoles. So, even if the next Xbox is 25% faster than the Sony PS6, it could potentially cost considerably more.

Additionally, the PS6 reporteldy packs up to 40 GB of 32 GT/s of GDDR7 on a 160-bit wide bus. This will result in a memory bandwidth of around 640 GB/s. For reference, the PS5 and the Xbox Series X carry a total of 16 GB of GDDR6 SDRAM.

Finally, MLID claims full PS5 and PS4 backwards compatibility for the PS6. We've previously heard similar claims regarding the PS6 handheld as well. However, fans who were also hoping for PS3 backward compatibility will be disappointed as Sony appears to have no such plans.

Sony PS6 release date

Previous leaks have put forth late 2027 as a possible release period for the Sony PlayStation 6. While MLID doesn’t reveal any exact release date, the leaker reports that Sony has planned manufacturing for mid-2027, with the official release date falling sometime in Fall 2027.
