Sony reportedly ran Gran Turismo 7 on Switch 2, possibly testing game for PS6 handheld

While PlayStation has yet to release a Switch 2 port for a first-party PS4 or PS5 exclusive game, it has shown interest in the handheld. The latest promising sign comes from insider and journalist Jeff Grubb. On a recent podcast, he revealed that Sony has tested Gran Turismo 7 on Nintendo’s console.
During the broadcast, Grubb said, “I heard recently that Gran Turismo was running on the Switch 2”, before doubting that an official release is in the works. He didn’t provide further explanation, only arguing that a PC version should be prioritized first.
Sony's curious Switch 2 playtest
How the developers managed to play the racing game on the console is unclear. While third-party support has improved, initially, some studios struggled to obtain dev kits. Given PlayStation's prowess, one would expect Nintendo to accommodate the company. Nevertheless, Sony-published titles must rely on backward compatibility with the original gaming handheld.
The most recent example is MLB The Show 26, a multi-platform baseball sim that debuts on March 17th. Nintendo fans had hoped that SIE would offer an upgraded version for Switch 2. Unfortunately, only a Switch port is shipping, with no confirmation of a patch to maximize visuals on the newer system.
There have been rumors that PS5 exclusive games may eventually come to the rival console. Death Stranding is one possibility, which is already available on some higher-end iPhone models. Like Gran Turismo 7, Hideo Kojima’s open-world adventure is also compatible with the less-demanding PS4.
Gran Turismo in the PS6 era
Another possibility is that Sony was curious about how its racing franchise would fare on its own portable system. Besides Remote Play on the PS Portal, there is no mobile option for the title. The PS6 handheld could arrive as early as 2027, with an AMD APU supporting the RDNA 5 architecture. That said, the device should be significantly more powerful than the Switch 2.
For now, gamers find it more puzzling that Gran Turismo 7 has not tapped into the massive PC market. Even with Sony’s multi-platform ambitions, it seems content to keep some experiences locked on its consoles.
