PlayStation 4 Portable V2: DIY handheld now more compact with GTX 750 fan

Earlier this year, a modder made a PS4 handheld, and while Sony works on its own PS6 handheld, the modder has come up with a version 2 for his DIY project. There are some changes with the V2, making it more compact without losing any power or battery life.

Shared by ‘wewillmakeitnow’ on Reddit, the modder is the same person behind the original PS4 handheld. Like the original, the V2 is also based on the PS4 Slim, but the motherboard has been cut to fit a compact handheld. It still has a 7-inch OLED panel with 1,080p resolution, as well as the smaller ESP32-powered display that shows real-time system information. It can also be connected to a TV via HDMI for a docked experience.

The new shell has been 3D printed, but there is an additional fan on the back that has been pulled out of a GTX 750 GPU. This fan, according to the modder, isn’t loud at all, but the smaller 30x30 fan inside is what makes most of the noise. The battery setup has been tweaked as well and now uses six 21,700 mAh cells for a total of 5,000 mAh battery capacity. Even though this is 1,000 mAh less than the original, the modder says it lasts about the same, between 1.5 and three hours.

Furthermore, the V2 handheld allows the battery pack to be removed easily, bringing the weight down to 900 grams. It can then be powered by a power adapter off the wall.

The modder doesn’t seem to have any plans of commercializing this design. And, since this requires cutting down the PS4 motherboard, not many would be willing to take on the challenge anyway. Nonetheless, a cool DIY project as Sony sunsets the last generation.
