Back in the day, Sony’s PSP and PS Vita competed in the handheld segment. Today, the Japanese company currently offers the rather untypical PlayStation Portal (from $199 on Amazon). This device does not have sufficient computing power for local video game rendering but is instead designed for cloud or local streaming from a PlayStation 5 home console. A modder has now showcased his self-made PlayStation 4 Slim handheld, which is not a commercial product but a personal DIY project. At least for now, there is still no detailed guide available to build this handheld, 3D print models have not been released either.
That being said, this system is based on the Sony PlayStation 4 Slim mainboard. This component has been trimmed down accordingly, which is anything but unusual for projects of this kind. The challenge is to remove only parts that are not strictly necessary, but the user named "wewillmakeitnow" also wanted to improve the console’s energy efficiency and cooling. According to his own statements, wewillmakeitnow has optimized heat dissipation and airflow.
He further opted for a 7-inch OLED display with 1080p resolution. The handheld can be used with external monitors and sports several USB ports that can also be used to hook up an external hard drive for more storage space. The specified battery life is not particularly long, but probably still usable. With less demanding games, this PS4 Slim handheld can supposedly run for up to three hours. More demanding titles will empty the 130Wh battery in around 1.5 hours.
