A new PvP shooter is gaining slow momentum on Steam, and it's not because of how it looks in screenshots. Instead, it seems to be attracting players based on the gameplay. Called Out of Action, it's a solo-developed project from indie studio Doku Games, and it puts players in fast-paced multiplayer matches that are built around movement and gunplay.
Now, while this early-access game may seem visually flat in screenshots, the minimalist sci-fi presentation, which seems to be a mix of The Finals and Cyberpunk 2077 (Switch 2 edition curr. $58.99 on Amazon), makes sense gameplay-wise. This clarity sells one of the aspects Out of Action focuses on: speed.
Movement is one of the game's core pillars, with players able to wall-run, slide, and wall-bounce to gain the upper hand. These movement mechanics will be pretty familiar to those who played multiplayer games like Titanfall, but note that there are no mechs and no flowing vertical maps.
Doku Games is also experimenting with a rare idea in multiplayer games: bullet-time. As the Kickstarter pitch describes, the slow-motion effect only affects players who are within each other's line of sight. That means fights within one part of the area can unfold dramatically while the others are continuing at full speed.
Speaking of combat, beyond the standard gunplay, the game has throwables, and players can deflect bullets with a katana or shoot down rockets while they're in mid-air. These mechanics set the game apart from conventional military shooters.
Currently, Out of Action holds a "Very Positive" rating that's based on over 270 reviews. Given that it's an indie game, there isn't a big player base surrounding it, but as SteamDB shows, there's an average of 200 players, so finding matches won't be very challenging.
As with most competitive PvP titles, its long-term viability will depend on continued player interest and consistent post-launch support. If the developer fails to meet these, this game may not go much beyond its current all-time peak of 315 players.
