Developed by 11 Bit Studios and released in 2018, Frostpunk is a first of it’s kind, city-building survival game. Set in the late 19th century, an unknown catastrophic event has triggered a worldwide mass cooling. Temperatures have dropped to unlivable levels worldwide, and humanity survived by banding together and heading north. After a mass exodus and a perilous journey braving the icy unknown, man builds the last city on earth.
Players must manage resources used to fuel a massive generator that powers and heats the city. Small parties can be sent out to explore areas outside the city for items or resources, and to find other survivors. As the last city of man grows, so too shall its needs and its complications. Leaders must manage both resources and society by making ‘morally grey’ decisions to ensure the city's survival, for if the city falls, so does the last of humanity.
Upon release, the game received favourable reviews from fans and critics alike, praising its focus on survival mechanics, threats, and addictive gameplay. A common aspect loved by all who played the game, though, was its unique use of moral mechanics, specifically the management and balancing of its citizens' demands and hope levels.
Some players voiced concerns about optimization issues, bugs, and glitches, but, as with any newly released game, those are generally accepted as issues that will be fixed in future patches. A common concern, though, was the lack of a sandbox mode, as players wanted much more from the game.
Frostpunk also comes with 3 pieces of DLC. First, The Rifts, introducing new mechanics, a new building, the bridge, and the much-demanded endless mode. Second, The Last Autumn, which introduced “game-changing new mechanics, unique architecture, and broadens the game's deep lore and narrative.” And finally, On the Edge adds more mechanics, new features, and new scenarios to the gameplay. The Last Autumn was the most liked DLC out of the three, praised especially for its unique scenario and new mechanics, which have greatly changed the game while maintaining its foundation.
Frostpunk is rated Very Positive, with over 121,000 positive reviews on Steam, where it can be purchased at a 85% discount for $4.49. The Game of the Year edition can also be purchased at a 82% discount for $8.06; this bundle includes all three DLC, two Soundtracks and an Artbook. Fans of the genre have until the 1st of February to avail these offers.
