When it comes to superhero games, it is hard not to mention the game series that essentially set the gold standard more than a decade ago: WB Games started the Arkham series, an action RPG based on Batman, with their initial hit, Batman: Arkham Asylum, back in 2009, and since then has seen numerous entries across multiple platforms, receiving widespread critical acclaim and success. The game held the title “Most critically acclaimed superhero videogame” by Guinness World Records, but was dethroned by its own sequel, Batman: Arkham City, in 2011. 

The Arkham series received critical acclaim from both fans and critics. While the gameplay and art were considered exceptional, it was especially praised for its dark, gritty portrayal of Gotham, its inhabitants, and the Bat’s arch-nemesis. The series currently holds the Guinness World Record for "the most critically acclaimed superhero videogame series" and is considered a must-play recommendation by many gamers. 

Gotham Knights, released in 2022, with gameplay similar to the Arkham series, presented players with a completely new storyline, based on the popular DC series Batman: Gotham Knights. The story follows the Bat-family, now made up of Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and the Red Hood, as they restore the balance of justice lost with the passing of The Bat. 

Each character comes with a specific gameplay style, weapons, and abilities as they move through an open-world environment set in Gotham. Players freely move around the city and interact with its denizens while completing ‘side-missions’. These missions can be completed to grant experience and level up the characters while following the main story. Every step will get you closer to the events leading to the death of Batman and the machinations of the forces behind it.

Gotham Knights received a warm reception upon release, going up against its previous fame from the Arkham series, and fans felt the game did not meet their expectations and could have done better. Despite this, some suggest one should play the game as its own entry, not as a competitor to the Batman series. A common concern was the gameplay's boring, repetitive nature: while repetitive mission types work in smaller, more linear Arkham-style worlds, the open-world's freedom made it feel a bit less potent.
