Professional HVAC tools are notoriously expensive, with meters like the Fluke 922 costing between $500 and $800, putting basic airflow testing out of reach for many small workshop owners and home DIYers. Developer Ardi Loot found out how to cut that price tag by over 90%, delivering the same diagnostic numbers for just $30 in parts.

The way the device works is surprisingly simple. When air pushes through a vent, pipe, or duct, it creates a tiny difference in air pressure, much like the pressure felt when blowing air through a narrow straw. By connecting two small flexible tubes to a digital sensor, the device measures that microscopic pressure drop. In this case, an ESP32 takes that reading, runs a basic math formula, and tells the user exactly how much air is moving through the room every second.

Despite costing only $30, the build uses the same high-grade Sensirion sensor found in professional equipment, detecting tiny pressure changes down to 0.1 Pascal. Realistically, this makes it an incredible tool for independent technicians balancing home heating vents, woodworkers tuning shop dust collectors, or hobbyists building custom ventilation hoods.

So, for those not wanting to pay a premium for a device to do basic math inside a yellow plastic case, users can build their own handheld meter, save over $500, and get similar professional-grade results.
