Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Switch 2 performance analysis finds advantages over PS5 and Steam Deck

Square Enix successfully transitioned Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade to Nintendo’s latest handheld. However, its follow-up is a more challenging Switch 2 game to optimize. Digital Foundry analyzed the available trailer to see how the title may stack up against the PS5 version. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on the Switch 2 could also make some Steam Deck owners jealous.
DLSS on the Switch 2 shines again
The tech site believes that in docked mode, the second part of the trilogy runs natively at 720p and 30fps. Then, DLSS lite upscales graphics to 1080p, significantly enhancing visual quality. Nevertheless, PS5 gamers will find that the developers did reduce some details to meet performance targets.
In graphics mode, Sony’s console renders Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth at around 4K, even if it struggles to maintain 30fps. On the Switch 2, Nintendo fans will notice that strands of hair on characters like Aerith lack definition. In the game’s resource-hungry open-world environments, there is less shrubbery, making the world look more sparse.
Performance mode on the PS5 may be a fairer comparison to the handheld. While it doubles frame rates, graphics are often blurrier, likely due to less effective upscaling. Digital Foundry noted that the PS5 Pro’s AI-powered PSSR made a dramatic difference.
Competing to the best handheld FF7 Rebirth port
The video doesn’t feature side-by-side footage with the Steam Deck version. Even so, one tester shared initial thoughts on how Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on the Switch 2 measures up to Valve’s device. Despite being Steam Deck verified, with crowded scenery, frame rates frequently dip into the low 20s. Pop-in is common at 720p, pushing the hardware to its limits. Oliver Mackenzie believes that the Nintendo port looks a “fair bit better than Steam Deck.”
Frame pacing is an issue on the build showcased in the Nintendo Direct trailer. That said, Square Enix was able to even out the performance of Remake Intergrade before the game shipped. Otherwise, most graphical downgrades from the PS5 alternative aren’t obvious without a similar technical analysis.
Fans can discover what improvements were made on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Switch 2 release date. It’s wise to complete its predecessor before June 3rd, since the title demands over 100GB of storage space.
