Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the largest Switch 2 game, forcing gamers to free up 102GB storage

The latest Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase confirmed a Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth release date on June 3rd. Gamers soon learned the cost and file size for the Switch 2 game, which will ship on a Game-Key Card. While many buyers find its $49.99 price reasonable, the 102GB installation could cause a storage crisis.
Adding Switch 2 storage quickly taxes budgets
When Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade arrived in January, it already took up at least 90GB on the handheld. Without an unlimited amount of time to complete the first part of the trilogy, its follow-up will soon be here. Newly crowned as the largest Switch 2 game, adding Rebirth will occupy 75% of the console’s 256GB internal drive.
Unfortunately, both Square Enix games are too massive to fit on a 64GB cartridge. A Game-Key Card allows owners to boot titles on multiple Nintendo handhelds, but relies mainly on downloaded data. Director Naoki Hamaguchi also revealed that the standard media might have throttled performance.
Despite the immense file size of the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Switch 2 port, it’s reasonable compared to other platforms. The PS5 version checks in at around 145GB, with similar requirements on PCs. In fact, Hamaguchi praised the efforts of developers on social media. Earlier, they managed to achieve a more compact Steam Deck installation.
Why the FF7 Remake Switch 2 port is gigantic
The second entry in the trilogy was particularly difficult to optimize for the studio. Its sprawling open-world landscapes led to larger assets, while straining CPUs and GPUs. A new trailer is available, but gamers will have to wait until the Rebirth release date to see if any details were compromised.
External MicroSD Express cards are one way to accommodate all three FF7 remakes. However, with AI data centers hogging NAND flash, they aren’t likely to become more affordable. The shortage also reduces the chances of Nintendo creating a Switch 2 Pro with a beefier drive.
Adding to the problem, rumors suggest Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 may emerge as soon as Summer 2026. It’s almost certain that the trilogy won’t fit on the handheld’s storage without purchasing accessories.
