Final Fantasy IX animated series officially resurfaces with new title and 10-episode format

The animated adaptation of Final Fantasy IX has once again appeared online - this time, it's listed as actively in production on the official EuroVisual website. The project is now titled Black Mages Legacy. This confirms earlier reports which surfaced in late 2025.
According to the listing, Season 1 will consist of 10 episodes, each running 22 minutes. For reference, a 13-episode plan was previously rumored. No release date is mentioned on the page, although earlier reports did point to a tentative 2028 window.
The show has had an uneven development cycle so far. It was initially tied to a different studio that later went into liquidation, before being picked up again under a new production setup. The series is licensed and approved by Square Enix, however, it does not involve the company directly in production.
Premise-wise, the show covers the story of a group of young Black Mages, described as children of Vivi-like characters, living in Alexandria after the events of the original game. The story is based around a conflict when one of them discovers a companion frozen in place.
The tone and setup looks to be targeted towards a younger audience, reportedly in the 6-13 age range. For now, the EuroVisual listing for Final Fantasy IX is the most concrete update in months. It confirms the project is still moving forward, but key details like release timing, platform, and full creative team are unclear until future notice.
