Sandisk unveils next-generation Portable SSD family with up to 4,000 MB/s transfer speeds

Compact SSDs are incredibly useful gadgets, especially for folks with high storage requirements who have gadgets with limited storage. Sandisk is among the most well-known brands in this arena, and has now unveiled its latest lineup of portable SSDs.
Third-gen Sandisk Portable SSD lineup with up to 8 TB storage
A total of three new products have been released, with a maximum capacity of 8 TB. The lineup includes the Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD, the Extreme PRO Portable SSD and the Portable SSD. The Extreme Portable SSD will support read speeds up to 2,000 MB/s, and will be available in 1 to 4 TB flavors, with a 500 GB variant planned for the near future.

The Extreme PRO Portable SSD, on the other hand, will be available in 2 to 4 TB flavors, with an 8 TB variant on track for later. Speeds reach up to 3,800 MB/s for writes and 4,000 MB/s for reads. The final product, the Portable SSD, is also the most affordable one. Capacities range from 500 GB to 2TB, and read speeds can reach 1,000 MB/s.
The Extreme PRO and Extreme SSDs come with 3 meters drop protection, while the Portable SSD is limited to 2 meters. The Extreme variants also pack IP65 water and dust resistance, while the vanilla Portable variant does not.
All of the SSDs will be available in the second half of 2026. Prices are set to be quite high, which is to be expected considering the ongoing supply crunches. The prices for the Extreme Portable SSD are as follows: 1 TB at $260, 2 TB at $460, and 4 TB at $920. However, the details for the other variants are under wraps for now.
Interestingly, the Crucial X10 Pro 1TB promises slightly faster transfer speeds, but is available at a much lower price of $162.34 on Amazon at the time of writing.
