AMD, Asus, and Lenovo may stop supporting Ryzen Z1 Extreme powered gaming handhelds as far as driver updates are concerned. These devices are not very old so its unfortunate that support is being dropped so early in the life cycle.

Gaming handhelds have become quite popular in past couple years. With hardware becoming more efficient and powerful, manufacturers have been able to produce on the go devices that are essentially gaming PCs. But not all is great in the gaming handheld space, if the latest information turns out to be accurate. It is being reported that support for Ryzen Z1 Extreme powered handhelds is ending, if not already ended.

As per the Tom’s Hardware report citing online reports and hardware manufacturers, AMD has stopped supporting the Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip. This means gaming handhelds running Windows 11 like the Asus ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, and Lenovo Legion Go will not get anymore driver updates. These updates are essential for optimizations and bug fixes, as well as ensuring the hardware is up to date with the latest software developments.

The publication states that Lenovo community representatives in Korea have been told that there will not be any more updates for the Legion Go. The Legion Go S models running Windows 11 may suffer the same fate, though the ones running SteamOS may still be supported, at least for now.

The original ROG Ally was released in June 2023 and followed by the ROG Ally X in 2024. It’s been two and a half years since the launch of the original model but it is still too early for support to end at this point. As for the Legion Go, the original model launched in October 2023 while the Legion Go S with the Z1 Extreme came out last year. If the reports turn out to be accurate, the early adopters will be at a loss.

It should be noted that neither of the three companies involved – AMD, Asus, Lenovo – have shared any such information officially.
