The Asus ROG Xbox Ally X and the cheaper ROG Xbox Ally have received plenty of updates since their full debut earlier this autumn. Ultimately, the older ROG Ally with a Ryzen Z1 Extreme or the Legion Go S with the Ryzen Z2 Go (curr. $579 on Amazon) are arguably the better purchases. However, Asus and Microsoft continue to work to improve the experience on the only Ryzen Z2 A-powered gaming handheld.
For instance, Asus began offering ACSE 2.1.15.0 earlier this month for all ROG Ally handhelds, including the ROG Xbox Ally. As we discussed at the time, this update integrated AMD Radeon Chill functionality within the company's FPS limiter to improve battery life by reducing CPU and GPU workload during less demanding sections of games. Moreover, ACSE 2.1.15.0 added the option of parking cores on the ROG Xbox Ally X to maximise performance.
Now, ETA Prime has demonstrated these performance improvements in a new video. Embedded below, the video also highlights Microsoft's new Default Game Profiles that reduce the need to tinker with settings to maximise performance and battery life. As it stands, Microsoft has created over three dozen profiles, a full list of which can be found on a dedicated developer post.
Arguably, CPU core parking generates the biggest performance improvements. For example, turning off two CPU cores allows the Radeon 890M to boost over 20% higher in games like Forza Horizon 5. The net result is around an 18% FPS increase while maintaining the same 18 W TDP. Please see the video below for more details.
