Verdict – The Asus ROG Xbox Ally just isn't fast enough
In our tests, the new ROG Xbox Ally showed disappointing performance, typically falling slightly behind the Steam Deck OLED. For a modern gaming handheld launching at the end of 2025 for €599, this is hard to justify. On the positive side, the device retains a very comfortable chassis, a high-quality 120 Hz IPS display with VRR, and solid battery life. Overall, the Xbox Ally is best suited for gamers who enjoy retro titles and prioritise comfort and ergonomics over raw performance.
It may also be worth trying SteamOS or Bazzite (both Linux) to squeeze a bit more performance out of the old Ryzen Z2 A (Zen 2). However, doing so means losing one of the main advantages of Windows, namely its extensive game library. Those who are satisfied with SteamOS, on the other hand, can simply opt for the Steam Deck OLED or the significantly cheaper Lenovo Legion Go S instead.
Those who can do without the more ergonomic housing should, if possible, invest a little more in last year's ROG Ally X or opt for the original ROG Ally and save some money that can be put toward a power bank. In that case, you get a very compact handheld with the same 7-inch display but significantly higher performance.
Pros
Cons
Price and availability
The Asus ROG Xbox Ally is available from Amazon for €599 in Europe and $599.99 USD in the United States. The handheld can be purchased through retailers such as Amazon and the official Asus online store.
In addition to the ROG Xbox Ally X priced at €899, Asus has also introduced the standard ROG Xbox Ally, which is considerably more affordable at a recommended retail price of €599 and is therefore intended as a direct competitor to Valve's Steam Deck OLED. The processor used is the AMD Ryzen Z2 A, but the modern-sounding name is somewhat misleading. In essence, it is the same hardware found in the Steam Deck, featuring four Zen 2 CPU cores and an RDNA 2 GPU. We examine whether it is still possible to play demanding titles smoothly with this more resource-intensive configuration.
The chassis is essentially identical apart from the colour. For more detailed information about the housing, input devices, the new Xbox full-screen mode, the display, and the speakers, please refer to our in-depth review of the ROG Xbox Ally X.
Specifications
Differences compared with the ROG Xbox Ally X
Apart from the white colour, the chassis is essentially identical to that of the more expensive ROG Xbox Ally X (black). The weight is about 50 grams lower, which is due to the smaller 60 Wh battery. The excellent comfort of the new design is, of course, also found on the cheaper Xbox Ally. However, this model lacks USB 4.0 support, which means that connecting an external graphics card is not possible, although this would not be advisable anyway given the slow processor.
The new Xbox full screen mode, which we covered in detail in our review of the Xbox Ally X, is also available on the Xbox Ally.
Performance – AMD Zen 2 and RDNA 2
The Ryzen Z2 A is based on the older Zen 2 architecture and is paired with 16 GB of RAM in the Xbox Ally. On our test device, 6 GB of this memory was assigned to the integrated RDNA 2 GPU by default, although this can be adjusted in the Armoury Crate SE software.
Test conditions
We conducted all benchmarks and measurements in Turbo Mode, where the processor is allowed to consume 24/20 watts. In Performance Mode it draws 15 watts, and in Silent Mode, 6 watts.
Processor
The Ryzen Z2 A offers only four Zen 2 cores (8 threads) with a maximum clock speed of 3.8 GHz. Accordingly, CPU performance is quite low, and the Xbox Ally ranks among the slowest handhelds in comparison.

Another downgrade can be found with the SSD, as the 512 GB model (420 GB free) from Foresee offers significantly lower transfer rates. At least performance remains stable under continuous load.

Gaming performance
We now come to the most important discipline, gaming performance. Here again, the results are disappointing, and in most cases the Xbox Ally is the slowest device, narrowly beaten by the Steam Deck OLED in all but one test. This means that games should preferably be played at 720p resolution, or users should stick to simpler titles and retro games. In addition, the new Xbox Ally is also noticeably slower than the first-generation ROG Ally with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme.

Battery life
The ROG Xbox Ally is equipped with a smaller 60 Wh battery, but thanks to its lower power consumption, runtimes are roughly on par with those of the ROG Xbox Ally X. In Turbo Mode, around 2 hours are possible, while in Performance Mode it lasts just under 3 hours. The only real difference appears in Silent Mode, where the runtime extends to almost 10 hours.
