A few days ago, we reported that the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme SoC, which powers many last-get gaming handhelds such as the Asus ROG Ally, Ally X, and Lenovo Legion Go, might no longer get any updates only around two and a half years after of arriving.
Understandably, the reports had made owners of the aforementioned gaming handhelds extremely upset, even despite the lack of any concrete statements. That said, things appear to have taken a turn for the better, with Asus having now launched updated drivers for the ROG Ally following a 6-month hiatus - the last update received by the Ally handheld was in August of last year.
Interestingly, as spotted by VideoCardz, the new AMD Graphics driver sits on the same branch as the previous update - V32.0.22029. Only the last number in the string has been updated, even though current Windows drivers for RDNA 3/4 GPUs have already moved to the V32.0.23025 branch, found here.
Although Lenovo Korea has suggested that the Ryzen Z1 Extreme-powered Legion Go handheld will no longer receive any driver updates, there has been no confirmation from AMD, and Lenovo's stance does not represent that of AMD's. Considering just how similar the Z1 Extreme and current-gen Z2 Extreme (Claw 8 currently $1,299 on Amazon) iGPUs are, it does not make a whole lot of sense for AMD to abandon those on the older platform.
