Nintendo may have a clever strategy to encourage the adoption of Game-Key Cards. A Switch 2 leak suggests that some titles lack an appropriate cartridge size. Medium-sized Switch 2 games are too large for the smallest media, making Game-Key Cards more economical.

Jordan of the Physical Paradise YouTube channel shared interesting news about Game-Key Cards. An expert on physical media, Jordan learned that Switch 2 cartridge sizes are surprisingly limited. While sizes up to 64 GB are available, this choice is very costly. Small versions cater to indie titles, but medium-sized Switch 2 games lack options. As a result, it's cheaper for some publishers to use Game-Key Cards.

The original Switch gave publishers more flexibility, with many sizes in the 1-16 GB range. If the latest Switch 2 leak is correct, only the games with the smallest file sizes can utilize cost-effective media. Larger titles fit on a pricey 64 GB cartridge but with significant wasted space. The only other solutions are a Nintendo Store digital release or relying on the new Game-Key Cards.

Switch 2 Game-Key Cards share characteristics of digital downloads and cartridges. Buyers receive tangible media, but the cards trigger the console to download game data. Purchases aren't tied to one system or account and are transferable to other consoles. Still, buyers are dependent on servers staying functional to install games in the future.

Even Jordan of Physical Paradise has some doubts about his own Switch 2 leak. Gamers have pointed out that Donkey Kong Bananza has 10 GB of data, yet a physical version exists. Nintendo is either wasting space on expensive 64 GB cartridges or has more options than its partners. Nevertheless, restricting cartridge sizes would be only one way Nintendo is moving toward digital gaming.

After the April 2nd Nintendo Direct, fans found that some physical Switch 2 games cost more than their digital counterparts. Also, Virtual Game Cards ease the transition to the digital age by allowing gamers to move downloaded titles between consoles. Both developments tempt gamers to stop assembling cartridge collections.
