Previous Switch 2 leaks discussed how Nintendo had shifted much of its console production to Vietnam. Now, Bloomberg is providing more exact numbers supplied by customs data. A key assembler shipped over 750,000 units from Vietnam to the US in February. After a 90-day delay in Trump tariffs, US gamers have hope that Switch 2 pre-orders will begin shortly.
Starting in January, nearly all Vietnam-made consoles went to the US. Since higher tariffs may resume in July, Nintendo will look to ship as many Switch 2 units from the nation to the US as possible. With Nintendo delaying Switch 2 pre-orders, a stockpile of unclaimed systems already exists. Although Canada was also affected, gamers in other countries, including the UK, can reserve the console.
Other countries are still responsible for two-thirds of Switch 2 production. It's believed that China, Taiwan, and Cambodia may supply the rest of the world with consoles. However, as steep Trump tariffs remain on China, Vietnam imports could shield American consumers from Switch 2 price hikes.
The Bloomberg report also included insight from a stock analyst, Robin Zhu. 10% tariffs remain on Vietnam, but Zhu believes Nintendo can absorb the added expense. The analyst suggested it costs the gaming giant $400 to make the machine, which is higher than other estimates.
Nintendo has received blowback over the Switch 2 price and the cost of physical games like Mario Kart World. Future increases would only encourage fans to stick with the original console. Switch 2 games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, debuting on the original Switch, also make the new system slightly less appealing. On the Kit & Krysta podcast, the former Nintendo employees didn't dismiss a price jump. Still, they believe the company wants to avoid any more negative press.
