Anbernic has not yet revealed when it will be releasing its first gaming handheld of the year. As it stands, the company has only confirmed that it will eventually be offering the RG557 as a successor to the RG556 (curr. $229.99 on Amazon) with a 1080p, 16:9 and 5.48-inch AMOLED display.
Nonetheless, Retro Handhelds received word last week that Anbernic has turned to MediaTek and the Dimensity 8300 for the RG557 rather than the Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 as was previously rumoured. Now, the website reports that the device is set to arrive with 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256 Gb of expandable storage.
Moreover, the RG557 is said to contain a 5,500 mAh battery that should deliver up to 8 hours of gameplay between charges. On top of that, the device is slated to offer 27 W wired charging with Hall effect triggers, 'anti-magnetic capacitive' joysticks and a six-axis gyroscope.
All this hardware is expected to be packed into a 223 x 89 x 15 mm housing that weighs approximately 347 g. Currently, Retro Handhelds estimates that Anbernic will release the RG557 for around $205, which would be a $30 and 17% increase over the RG556. In the meantime, Anbernic has published more game play footage of the RG557 in three launch colours, which we have embedded below.
