Anbernic has now taken a step closer to releasing the RG557, having confirmed the device's existence a little over a week ago. As is often the case with Anbernic, it has elected to reveal details about its next gaming handheld bit by bit rather than all at once. Consequently, there have been various leaks about the RG557 since and how Anbernic plans to distinguish it from the existing RG556 (curr. $229.99 on Amazon).
In short, all prior leaks have been accurate in their content. As the video below confirms, Anbernic has equipped the RG557 with the MediaTek Dimensity 8300 and 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM., which will power a 5.48-inch and 1080p AMOLED display. Although not the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 that was initially rumoured, the Dimensity 8300 should give the RG557 a massive performance advantage over its predecessor.
An active cooling solution should minimise thermal throttling too, while 256 GB of UFS 4.0 flash storage should keep system performance ticking along nicely. On top of that, the RG557 boasts Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, a 5,500 mAh battery with support for 27 W charging and capacitive joysticks.
Anbernic has not revealed when or how much it plans to charge for the RG557. Based on recent rumours, the device will arrive for about $205, which would represent a $30 and 17% bump over the RG556. Presumably, Anbernic will reveal these final pieces of the RG557 puzzle in the coming days.
