Anbernic RG556 launches as new Retroid Pocket 4 gaming handheld rival for $174.99
Anbernic has now confirmed full launch details for the RG556, a week after revealing PS2 emulation and Android gaming performance levels. As expected, Anbernic is selling the RG556 in multiple colour options. However, it has elected against releasing the device in the glossy white finish that leaked late last month.
Instead, Anbernic is offering the RG556 in black and translucent blue finishes, each with a choice between 128 GB and 256 GB MicroSD card options. In summary, the Anbernic RG556 features the following hardware:
- 5.48-inch AMOLED display - 1,920 x 1,080 pixels
- Unisoc T820 SoC
- 8 GB LPDDR4x RAM
- 128 GB UFS 2.2 flash storage
- 5,500 mAh battery
Additionally, Anbernic has included hall effect triggers, hall effect joysticks and a six-axis gyroscope, all within a 223 x 90 x 15 mm and 331 g package. In other words, the RG556 will compete against the Retroid Pocket 4 in many areas. In saying that, the Pocket 4 may be slightly more powerful than Anbernic's gaming handheld, despite its smaller footprint.
Moreover, the RG556 runs Android 13 natively but only contains a single USB Type-C port for charging and connecting to an external display using the DisplayPort Alt Mode protocol. The Anbernic RG556 starts at $174.99 and rises to $204.99 in $15 increments when adding a MicroSD. Currently, Anbernic hopes to begin shipping RG556 orders 'after March 5th'.
