Sugar Cubes X Jelly transforms compact Android smartphone into horizontal and vertical gaming handhelds
Last month, newcomer to the gaming handheld space Sugar Cubes revealed its first product. Dubbed 'Small Universe X Sugar Cubes', the device resembled an Analogue Pocket, albeit with a Snapdragon 888 instead of an FPGA chipset. Arguably, the most notable feature of the Small Universe X Sugar Cubes was its 4:3 display, though which can be rotated 90 degrees.
Subsequently, Sugar Cubes has detailed one of its other projects, which resembles two gaming handhelds at first glance. However, the 'Sugar Cubes X Jelly' is actually a controller accessory for the Unihertz Jelly Star, a particularly compact smartphone that debuted in June 2023. In summary, the Jelly Star features a 3-inch display, runs Android 13 and utilises a MediaTek Helio G99 chipset that also powers the Realme 10 and the Lenovo Tab P11 2022, among other devices.
Theoretically, the Jelly Star should outperform cheaper gaming handhelds, particularly those with low-powered Unisoc chipsets, although not the Unisoc T820 that underpins the new Anbernic RG556. Regardless, Retro Dodo has been informed that the Sugar Cubes X Jelly will be available in vertical and horizontal versions, each with various colour options. Unfortunately, other details like pricing, availability and a release date remain unknown for now.
