Anbernic has had an uncharacteristically quiet start to the year. For context, the company introduced a new gaming handheld monthly throughout 2024. By contrast, it has not released any new products this year at the time of publication.
Instead, the only Anbernic launch this side of 2024 is the Glacier colour refresh of the RG34XX, which landed less than a month after the device's initial launch (curr. $89.99 on Amazon). With that being said, it is now apparent that a successor to the RG556 is almost upon us in the form of the RG557.
Given that the company has waited until April before teasing new hardware, one might expect Anbernic to have slowed down somewhat. However, it appears that a veritable avalanche of new Anbernic gaming handhelds are waiting in the wings.
Apparently, Anbernic plans to introduce 'at least seven or eight' new devices this year, excluding the RG557. This number may be on the conservative side too, with the company estimating that 'about ten' could be closer to the final number.
Currently, it looks likely that the RG557 is on track to be launched later this month. Anbernic's first MediaTek Dimensity 8300-powered gaming handheld is set to be swiftly followed up with another two models, though. Based on recent rumours, one of these could be the RG34XX SP, which is reputed to be more than an RG34XX in the shell of an RG35XX SP. Anbernic has not released its translucent pink or fuschia finishes that leaked in February, either. It remains to be seen whether these constitute a new release for Anbernic at this stage, though.
