In Severed Steel, you step into the shoes of Steel – a one-armed sharpshooter on a mission for revenge against a corrupt megacorporation. Set in a sleek, futuristic fortress, the game keeps its storytelling minimal, letting the breakneck gameplay take center stage. With fluid movement, bullet time mechanics and acrobatic combat, the focus is on delivering fast and stylish action
Severed Steel shines with its fluid stunt system, letting players chain together acrobatic moves like wallruns, flips and slides as part of the combat. The German magazin GameStar even calls it “breathtaking stunts à la Matrix”, a comparison that fits well. Just like Neo, you’ll dive through slow-motion bullet storms, leap off walls and eliminate enemies with pinpoint style. One standout feature is the absence of a reload button. Instead, you grab weapons from fallen foes, keeping the action fast, unpredictable and constantly in motion.
The environment in Severed Steel is fully destructible, allowing you to blast through walls with Steel’s arm cannon to forge new paths and gain a tactical edge. Combined with dynamic, squad-based AI, every encounter plays out differently, adding a strong sense of replayability. Beyond the campaign, the game features a fast-paced Firefight mode, an arcade-style challenge with 42 levels where you chase high scores and climb the leaderboards. For creative players, the built-in level editor with Steam Workshop support lets you design your own maps and share them with the community.
Reviews: Fast-paced gameplay, story takes a back seat
In a German review by ps4source.de, Severed Steel received mostly positive feedback, particularly for its fast-paced action and intense, driving soundtrack. The story, however, takes a backseat – told purely through visuals and without dialogue, making it more atmospheric than narrative-driven. Despite this, the game enjoys a very strong reception on Steam, boasting a 95% positive rating from around 5,600 reviews. On Metacritic, the verdict is more moderate. Critics gave it a Metascore of 73, while players rated it slightly lower with a User Score of 7.2. The main points of criticism are the shallow storyline and the relatively short playtime. According to HowLongToBeat, completing the main story along with all additional content takes roughly 6.5 hours.
