Enterprising gamers continue to look for ways to expand Switch 2 storage. In the latest promising development, the handheld has recognized an external M.2 SSD drive. Other adapters connected to the system’s MicroSD Express card slot produced error messages.

Although MicroSD Express cards offer improved speeds, some gamers seek more Switch 2 storage options. Modders have attempted to connect M.2 SSD drives to the console without success. However, it appears that a Japanese user has triumphed where others have failed.

What's unique about this Switch 2 storage mod?

Mizuyoukan shared his accomplishment on social media, which involves a custom-made PCB board. One end slots into the handheld’s port for expandable storage. The MicroSD Express standard supports the same PCIe Gen 3 x1 interface and NVMe protocols. Yet, past efforts to trick the system have resulted in error messages due to handshake issues.

The latest endeavor takes a different approach, soldering another MicroSD Express slot onto the adapter. As Mizuyoukan explains, he uses a card with a smaller capacity than the adjacent 512GB M.2 SSD. The Switch 2 storage menu shows that the gamer circumvented the console’s initialization process.

Whether this feat will yield tangible benefits for most consumers is questionable. An M.2 SSD adapter is not a very portable solution and could drain the handheld’s battery quickly. In this case, the modder apparently relies on an external USB power source to supply the PCB board with enough current.

Rising storage prices have impacted M.2 SSDs

During the AI-fueled memory shortage, MicroSD Express cards have become difficult to find in Japan. At the same time, prices have jumped, particularly for the higher-capacity 512GB and 1TB models. Unfortunately, while still cheaper in comparison, SSDs are now more expensive globally. That makes them less appealing as an alternative.

Nintendo would also likely attempt to block any unofficial method of connecting M.2 SSDs. That said, it doesn’t seem that the modder bypassed security measures that could lead to booting pirated ROMs.

Even with drawbacks, many Nintendo fans are rapidly running out of space on the handheld’s 512GB internal drive. Switch 2 games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade ship on Game-Key Cards that require enormous installations. Any more cost-efficient way to expand the console’s storage is worth considering.
