One store isn’t risking losing sales to the eShop on new Switch 2 games. Nintendo revealed that digital first-party titles would cost less than the MSRP of physical versions. Walmart is matching the prices on Yoshi and Mysterious Book and Splatoon Raiders, despite declining profit margins.

Nintendo recently announced that digital first-party Switch 2 games would be more affordable than physical versions. That may have created tension with stores that already see dwindling profit margins on boxed copies. In response, one major retailer has begun to match eShop discounts on new releases.

Which Nintendo games are getting a price cut?

Walmart has offered incentives for owners of the handheld, but rarely on pre-orders for new Switch 2 games. However, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book and Splatoon Raiders are both listed at lower than Nintendo’s MSRP. The deals are available both in-store and with free shipping to many U.S. locations.

The upcoming Yoshi puzzle-platformer is the first example of the gaming giant’s revamped pricing strategy. At the Nintendo eShop, buyers can secure the digital version for $59.99. Meanwhile, the company recommended that stores sell the cartridges at $69.99. Walmart has decided to discount the physical alternative by $10 as well.

Splatoon Raiders is a single-player iteration of the paint-splattering shooter. With a July 23rd release date, Walmart shoppers can add the retail case and game to their collections for $49.94. Otherwise, most competitors have it listed for $59.99, identical to the cost at the eShop.

Why digital gaming is winning

Whether the retailer will continue these pre-order and potentially post-release deals is unclear. In its announcement, Nintendo explained that it has become increasingly difficult to keep physical Switch 2 game prices stable. It can sell digital titles more cheaply by avoiding shipping and manufacturing expenses.

Tariffs, fuel prices, and a shortage of NAND flash storage used in cartridges are also factors. A rumor suggested that the company is now sending some publishers lower-cost, lower-capacity game cards. Nevertheless, in a challenging economy, digital distribution has an advantage.

Walmart may be able to absorb some losses because of its tremendous sales volume. Appealing Switch 2 promotions can encourage foot traffic, leading to more lucrative purchases. Sadly, smaller sellers will struggle to overcome the new divide between physical and digital costs.
