According to the latest information from Bloomberg sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 ($449. on Amazon) before Christmas have been far worse than Nintendo predicted, in several regions, but especially in the USA. Although sales in Nintendo's home market are expected to remain strong, this is not least due to the fact that the Nintendo Switch 2 is available in Japan for a recommended retail price of just $314.
In response to these sluggish sales, Nintendo is said to have already reduced production of the hybrid console from 6 to 4 million units in the first quarter of 2026, and production volumes in April are also expected to be lower than originally planned. Demand could be further curbed if Nintendo increases the price of the console, which could become necessary due to the DRAM crisis. Bloomberg speculates that the drop in demand could lead to new hardware revisions being launched earlier than planned.
While no details of these revisions are yet known, it is conceivable that Nintendo will take a similar approach to the first-generation Nintendo Switch. This received a revision with almost double the battery life two years after its launch, shortly after a much more compact, cheaper model without a docking station was announced in the form of the Nintendo Switch Lite. Another two years later, the Nintendo Switch OLED followed with a larger 7-inch OLED touchscreen, doubled internal memory and a revised design.
