Oppo Find X9 Ultra: Native 10x optical zoom compared to teleconverter setups

Even though external lenses – such as teleconverters designed for the Vivo X200 Ultra or X300 Pro – may deliver great performance, they typically require a special case and add extra gear to carry around if you want to capture high-quality shots of distant subjects. Scheduled for a global launch in April, the upcoming Oppo Find X9 Ultra may be an attractive option for those who prefer to travel lighter.
For the first time, Oppo has shared official teasers on Weibo and via Pete Lau on X to showcase its integrated 10x zoom module. In China, the company has provided a fairly detailed look at the design and working principles of the system. Oppo included a new mirror assembly measuring just 29 mm in length, featuring a five-reflection, W-shaped light path to achieve superior optical performance at an equivalent focal length of 230 mm.

This module is also said to produce significantly less stray light than a conventional four-reflection system. Oppo attributes this partly to ND filter coatings along the light path and prisms cut with nano-level precision. While the Samsung ISOCELL JN5 (1/2.76-inch, 50 MP) is no longer the newest sensor, Oppo revealed on Weibo that it has been optimised for the optical zoom system, for example, to help maintain colour consistency with the other cameras on the Find X9 Ultra. Finally, a triple-calibration process is used during production to ensure that every module delivers optimal performance.
Teaser video shows teleconverter built into phone
A teaser video from China shows a bulky teleconverter disappearing into the Find X9 Ultra, which is an effective bit of marketing rather than a factually accurate representation. For comparison, the combination of the Vivo X300 Pro and its 200 mm teleconverter can harness the power of a 1/1.4-inch, 200 MP sensor, which should on paper deliver significantly better image quality than the Find X9 Ultra’s native 10x periscope zoom – as impressive as Oppo’s solution may be compared with earlier efforts.
Comparison with flagship equipped with teleconverter
The sample image below is intended to illustrate what the Oppo Find X9 Ultra’s 10x optical zoom is capable of next to an unnamed flagship fitted with an external telephoto extender. If Oppo’s system can approach the quality offered by a dedicated teleconverter setup, then it is likely adequate for most users. At any rate, it is a good option to have when you don’t have a teleconverter with you.

Oppo compares 10x optical zoom with earlier 10x solution
Speaking of earlier solutions, the following clip compares the Find X9 Ultra’s native 10x zoom with that of an unnamed previous-gen phone offering the same magnification – most likely referring to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra or the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, as no other devices seem to match the description.
