A Camera Powerhouse: Oppo Find X9 Ultra hands-On

Yesterday, Oppo unveiled its latest flagship smartphone in the Chinese city of Chengdu: the Oppo Find X9 Ultra. We’ve had the chance to test it out a bit over the past few days and would like to share our hands-on experience with you.
The Find X9 Ultra features a 6.82-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz and native 10-bit color depth. To reduce eye strain, it incorporates high-frequency PWM dimming at 2,160 Hz. The brightness is said to range from 1 to 3,600 cd/m². That sounds very bright at first, but on a hot day in Chengdu (30 °C), we found that this wasn’t enough. The Find X9 Ultra got very warm while filming and taking photos, and the display was sometimes difficult to read in the sun. However, this could also be attributed to the heat generation, which caused the display to dim. The detailed test will reveal the exact details.
With the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and 12 GB of LPDDR5x RAM, the Find X9 Ultra is beyond reproach in terms of performance and has so far delivered smooth system performance and fast media processing. With Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and NFC, the communication features are nearly complete; only UWB is missing. The operating system is Android 16 with ColorOS 16. Oppo is providing five years of major updates and an additional year of security patches.

The centerpiece of the Oppo smartphone, however, is the rear camera setup, which was once again developed in collaboration with Hasselblad. The main sensor is a Sony LYT-901, which is slightly smaller than the 900 series sensor in the Find X8 Ultra but, in return, features a larger aperture (f/1.5) and is thus said to be able to capture just as much light. This is currently the largest camera sensor available, with 200 MP. The setup is complemented by a 3x (200 MP, OV52A) and a 10x (50 MP, JNL) optical zoom, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a sensor dedicated solely to collecting color information. The results from the Oppo Find X9 Ultra’s camera have been excellent so far. The autofocus works quickly, the live view provides a good preview even in the dark, and the shutter lag is minimal. Only in low-light situations are the zoom lenses quite slow, but this can be mitigated using night mode.
The build quality of the Oppo Find X9 Ultra is impressive, even though the smartphone isn’t exactly lightweight at 236 grams. Given the camera and the large 7,050 mAh battery, however, that’s a minor drawback.
Our first impression is very positive; a detailed review will follow soon. The Find X9 Ultra is now available for order globally, including directly from Oppo.
