Lower cost digital Switch 2 games have given budgets a slight reprieve. Even so, a former retail-focused Nintendo employee believes a more expensive console could wipe out those savings. If the memory shortage prompts a price increase, the company might counter with other discounts.

Nintendo caused confusion with a recent price drop on digital Switch 2 games. They will sell for less than first-party physical titles, but critics worry about more expensive cartridges. A former member of Nintendo's sales team believes that scenario is unlikely. Still, the company may be softening the blow of an inevitable Switch 2 price increase.

Uncertainty surrounding Nintendo pricing

Referred to as Sean, the ex-employee appeared on the latest Kit & Krysta podcast. In a unique position to discuss the gaming giant’s retail plans, he shared his thoughts on potential price hikes.

A strategy shift accompanies the arrival of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. Buyers will pay $59.99 for the eShop version and $69.99 for the physical alternative. However, it’s not clear whether fans can expect more $80 Switch 2 games like Mario Kart World. Exceptions are possible, but Sean predicted, “I think physical games are going to stay at the price that they're at now.”

The podcast guest explains how the company can still profit from digital purchases. They are cheaper to release than game cards, which are under threat from stretched NAND flash supplies. eShop titles also aren’t affected by shipping logistics or rising diesel costs.

Cheaper games but pricier console?

Unfortunately, a Switch 2 price increase for hardware may be unavoidable. Xbox and PS5 systems could not escape the effects of the memory shortage. If Nintendo eventually follows, it will argue for the strong “overall value proposition” of its console regardless. More budget-friendly digital games are one way to encourage original Switch owners to upgrade.

The former sales lead also anticipates new bundles with exclusive games debuting. A configuration costing in excess of $500 may include a longer Nintendo Switch Online subscription or an additional accessory.

While Sean lacks any inside information, console makers are facing unprecedented manufacturing challenges. He advises gamers to secure a Switch 2 at its current MSRP.
