Major PS5 and PS5 Pro price increase rumored, as Sony faces memory shortage

Earlier in 2026, Sony Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao explained that the manufacturer had prepared for the memory shortage. Regardless, in at least one region, PlayStation consoles may soon stretch budgets further. A French content creator has leaked new, significantly higher PS5 and PS5 Pro prices.
How reputable is Gyo?
Buyers should wait for confirmation from more sources before panicking. Still, the leaker, Gyo, has some history of accurate predictions in the retail gaming market. Chiming in on social media, store owners have apparently heard similar news.
If correct, the PS5 price increases would likely take effect across Europe, with an announcement expected shortly. It’s not clear if the U.S. or other parts of the world will be impacted.

Gyo revealed that the MSRP of the PS5 Slim Disc Edition would rise from €549.99 to €649.99. The PS5 Pro could cost gamers an imposing €899.99, rather than €799.99. Even the PS Portal would suffer a price hike from €219.99 to €249.99.
Without any mention of the PS5 Slim Digital, it’s possible that the system is safe. EU buyers last saw Sony adjust PlayStation console pricing in April 2025. At that time, only the digital option jumped from €449.99 to €499.99, while the disc alternative stayed at €549.99. Meanwhile, the U.S experienced its own PS5 price increases in August 2025.
A PS5 with Pro-level pricing
Even with component scarcity and tariffs, the PS5 Pro price had remained fixed in the region. Gamers hoping to benefit from the upgraded PSSR upscaling may now face sticker shock. EU prices generally include VAT, but €899.99 converts to $1038 in U.S. currency.
There is skepticism about the report because it would seem to contradict Sony's position. The memory shortage has threatened the console market, already delaying the Steam Machine release date. Yet, Lin Tao’s recent statements suggested that the company would compensate for lost profits through games and subscriptions.
Rumors hinted that Sony had stockpiled DRAM before the crisis deepened. However, with PS5 sales still impressive, eventually supplies will run out. Despite its best efforts, the gaming giant may choose to pass the additional cost onto consumers.
