Support studios for Sony Interactive Entertainment are adopting a new philosophy. XDev and Valkyrie Entertainment stress PlayStation exclusivity, while omitting multiplatform references. Rumors hint that Sony is cutting back on PS5 PC ports to incentivize buyers to purchase its consoles.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported on how Sony is tweaking its multiplatform strategy. He expects more single-player PlayStation exclusives to remain locked to its consoles, leading to fewer PS5 PC ports. Now, several of the company’s support studios seem to be altering their focus to reflect the shift.

XDev's history with PlayStation

On social media, Zuby_Tech shared that XDev updated its mission statement. Owned by SIE, the studio helped independent developers with games like Detroit: Become Human and Returnal. Both titles launched on the PS4 or PS5, but eventually came to PC. However, suddenly it’s emphasizing exclusivity in its description.

Previously, the company’s goal was “Collaborating with ambitious external studios across the globe.” After the edit, the text reads, “Partnering with talented independent studios to publish exciting, exclusive titles for PlayStation players worldwide.”

Other Sony-controlled support houses are also less eager to promote PS5 PC releases. PlayStation bought Valkyrie Entertainment in 2021 before it assisted with titles including God of War Ragnarök. Its description had included, “producing high-quality work on a range of platforms from console to PC”. It now makes its first-party affiliation clearer, while removing any mention of PC.

All the revisions happened recently, suggesting a coordinated response to a new Sony initiative. Although Schreier is a credible insider, some fans are eager for an official announcement. The journalist explained that the gaming giant’s partners may be the first to reveal its plans. That appears to be the case with XDev and Valkyrie Entertainment.

Will Sony clarify its multiplatform future?

The rumors have caused angst among Steam supporters anticipating ports of PS5 games like Saros and Ghost of Yōtei. Looking further ahead, Marvel’s Wolverine looks less likely to go multiplatform. It’s now questionable whether any future single-player PlayStation exclusives will surface on Valve’s marketplace.

Why SIE would sacrifice the additional revenue from wider releases is up for debate. Some analysts think that after a strong start, only the live-service multiplayer Helldivers 2 met expectations for sales. The company could also want to preserve selling points for its upcoming PS6 console.
