With only 9 PS5 exclusive games available, fans debate Sony's cross-platform strategy

Given that the console shipped in 2020, some supporters bemoan the lack of PS5 exclusive games. In a comparison with the Switch 2 and the Xbox, Game Rant found 9 titles that aren’t available on other systems. Sony’s rumored plan to cut the number of PC ports may not have a dramatic effect either.
Exclusivity has various interpretations
The Game Rant article lists selections as of February 2026 and also comes with several caveats. It doesn’t include PS5 candidates accessible on PCs and announced releases like Death Stranding 2. Critics would note that even temporary PlayStation exclusivity makes first-party hardware more appealing.
PS4 or PSVR2 titles that are only options on the headset didn’t qualify. Nevertheless, the rather concise list is as follows:
- Astro Bot
- Astro's Playroom
- Code Violet
- Demon's Souls
- Destruction AllStars
- Ghost of Yōtei
- God of War Sons of Sparta
- Quantum Error
- Silent Hill: The Short Message
With Microsoft now prioritizing cross-platform games, Xbox Series X|S consoles fare even worse. The surviving perk of these systems is day-one attractions like Forza Horizon 6. The open-world racer will debut on PCs in May immediately and arrive on PlayStation late in 2026.
Meanwhile, despite its June 2025 release date, the Switch 2 already has 11 games not ported to competing platforms. With its own projects, Nintendo has shown no indication of embracing the PS5, Xbox, or PC.
Will fewer PS5 games on PC change the equation?
Recently, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier suggested that Sony was rethinking its approach to first-party PS5 exclusive games. Steam users may no longer see single-player experiences like Ghost of Yōtei or the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine added to the marketplace. One theory is that revenue from Valve’s storefront hasn’t been as strong as anticipated.
Even if sales haven’t met expectations, most Redditors wonder why PlayStation would refuse additional income. Yet, while buyers want access to games regardless of platform, critics of Microsoft argue that the company has devalued its consoles.
OrganicKeynesianBean said, “Clearly this is very anti-consumer, but I think Sony is looking at the trainwreck happening at Xbox and thinking, 'maybe not everything should be a PlayStation’.”
In reality, Game Rant’s list of PS5-locked titles is unlikely to grow significantly. Signs point to Sony continuing to accommodate other systems with its live-service candidates. At the same time, the number of story-driven single-player alternatives published by SIE has diminished.
