Sony may be prioritizing PS6 games after moving away from PlayStation PC ports

Some gamers remain skeptical of a 2027 PS6 release date. However, journalist Jeff Gerstmann believes studios are likely already working on projects for the console. A rumored decision to abandon PlayStation PC ports may also show Sony is accelerating plans for the system.
The former Gamespot Editorial Director and Giant Bomb co-founder now hosts a regular podcast. In a recent episode, Gerstmann explained that “every studio that isn't already working on a PS5 game needs to be pushing in the direction of PlayStation 6.” Many developers may have started focusing on the future.
While the podcaster can’t confirm the timing, he wouldn’t be surprised if the system surfaces earlier than some followers predict. There have been questions about whether, if it comes with a high price tag, PS6 specs would impress enough to encourage sales. The memory shortage also makes delays or higher MSRPs than anticipated a possibility.
Why do PS5 exclusives matter to the PS6?
Gerstmann suggests that despite these concerns, Sony is transitioning to the next generation. A move to keep single-player PS5 exclusives off Steam could benefit upcoming hardware. With fewer PlayStation PC versions, buyers would have more incentive to purchase the console.
Sony has faced criticism for investing heavily in live-service titles. Concord was a major disappointment, while Marathon has not yet met Bungie’s projections. Still, the company realizes that multi-platform shooters will not draw all buyers to its next console. Like with its predecessors, the follow-up calls for unique single-player PS6 games.
Whether PlayStation will change its approach again is debatable. For now, gamers can still expect multiplayer titles like Horizon Hunters Gathering to appear on Steam. Sony may wait to announce the PS6 release date, but Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier thinks it could soon clarify its stance on PS5 exclusives.
