Major PlayStation Store update possible with PS5 PC cross-platform features

A Sony Interactive Entertainment job listing may hint at future PlayStation Store updates. Spotted by Phrasemaker, the position is for a server-side engineer focused on PSN and voice chat. Despite predictions of fewer PS5 PC games, the ad discusses cross-platform capabilities.
PlayStation party chart could evolve
While some changes may be visible to gamers, the PSN backend could undergo an overhaul. The applicant would be “building a new server architecture, regardless of the existing framework.” Even so, in light of recent rumors, the next sentence draws more attention:
We are currently working to further enhance the communication features that connect players worldwide and to develop new features (voice chat functionality) for multi-platform deployment (console, PC, mobile).
At the moment, party chat is only an option on consoles and mobile devices. With Helldivers 2 as an example, Steam users need to rely on in-game communication, or alternatively, PS Remote Play, or Discord. Sony may be considering making similar functionality available on desktops and laptops.

For a while, it seemed that the gaming giant was striving for parity on all systems. In November 2025, a dataminer unearthed references to a PS5 PC cross-buy icon on the PlayStation Store. In theory, buyers could purchase a first-party cross-platform game once and access it on PCs and consoles. However, all traces of the code have now disappeared.
Recently, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier revealed that Sony will cut back on the number of titles ported to Steam and the Epic Games Store. The potential shift threatens future releases such as Saros and Marvel’s Wolverine. Still, the change in direction would likely not involve live-service multiplayer games.
PS5 PC ports aren't disappearing
Helldivers 2 has been a tremendous success, but other GaaS titles from SIE have not fared as well. The disastrous Concord was a PS5 exclusive at launch in 2024, which limited its player base. On the other hand, the co-op action game Horizon Hunters Gathering will ship day one on the PS5 and PC.
Steam fans resisted mandatory PSN logins with the requirement shutting out players in some regions. Nevertheless, Sony’s cross-platinum live-service push shows no signs of ending. As a result, it will continue to lure gamers to the network, if not ultimately, the PlayStation Store.
